Gomes to head New Caledonia/French consultation group

New Caledonia's president, Phlippe Gomes, has been elected unanimously to lead the joint New Caledonian/French commission overseeing the transfer of funds from Paris to Noumea.

This followed a meeting of the 12-strong organistaion at the French high commission.

The consultative commission oversees the gradual transfer of competencies to New Caledonia and its provinces, with the French state inscribing in its budget the costs of the service.

The workings of this body was laid out in an organic law dating back to the late 1990s.
