Indications Sir Michael Somare could return as PNG PM sooner than expected

Papua New Guinea's acting prime minister Sam Abal has announced that Sir Michael Somare is on holiday and will resume duties whenever he thinks it is appropriate for him.

The Post Courier reports Mr Abal's statement comes almost a month after Sir Michael said he was voluntarily stepping aside as Prime Minister to allow for investigations into charges of misconduct in office.

It says the statement indicates that Sir Michael could legally resume duties after his holiday.

The paper reports that some legal experts have advised that the constitution does not allow for the Prime Minister to step aside, as it would be deemed to be a resignation.
