Fiji sugar growers call for crushing extension

4:08 pm on 5 January 2011

The Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Council is seeking an extension of crushing at the Rarawai Sugar Mill before the end of the 2010 crushing season.

The Sugar Industry Tribunal had made an order for crushing at Rarawai to cease on Friday.

The Council's Acting Chief Executive Office, Sundresh Chetty, says he will meet FSC officials to request for the extension of the crushing season for a few more days.

Mr Chetty says they want an extension so that all harvested cane can be crushed.

Mr Chetty has told FBC News they will push for an extension as the weather has now improved and farmers can harvest and deliver more cane to the mill.
