Call for bread price hike in French Polynesia

4:08 pm on 5 January 2011

French Polynesia's baker union wants the official price of the standard bread stick, or baguette, to be raised by four US cents by the middle of the month.

The head of the organisation in Tahiti, Franklin Sui, has told the newspaper La Depeche that a price of 60 US cents is what he considers a minimum.

He says such a rise is justified because of the increase in the value of the Australian dollar and the rise in social security contributions.

Mr Sui says if the request is not met, there could be a strike in producing the bread sticks and a limitation to baking only bread with unsubsidised flour.
