9:36 am on 8 January 2011

American Samoa Governor Togiola Tulafono will not be making any announcement on austerity measures until his state of the territory address next week. .

The treasurer Magalei Logovii, says the governor and Fono leaders decided at their meeting yesterday to make the announcement on further cuts to meet the revenue shortfall when he presents his address at the opening of the 32nd Legislature on Monday.

Yesterday's meeting between the governor and Fono leaders came after the Senate President and Speaker wrote to the governor expressing concern and surprise with the announced reduction in hours for government employees when financial reports and testimonies from key finance officials had indicated that the financial situation was stable and that FY2010 was even ending in the black.

The Fono leaders also pledged the legislature's support in minimizing any financial backlash.

Magalei says directors will hear about the governor's decision as everyone else when the Govenor gives his speech at the fono.

Meanwhile government employees can look forward to receiving a full paycheck on the next payday , Monday after next.

The Treasurer says it's too late to cut the hours for that payperiod.
