The family of a prisoner in Samoa who was allegedly beaten by a prison warder on Christmas Day is calling for an immediate police inquiry into the incident.

A source in the Samoa victim support group says the family has approached the organisation for help but the police have yet to receive a formal complaint from the prisoner's relatives.

The incident reportedly took place in front of other inmates at the main Tafa'igata prison.

The victim support group says the inmate in question is suffering from serious injuries as a result of the alleged beating.
