Solomons opposition welcomes beche-de-mer probe

2:32 pm on 12 January 2011

The Solomon Islands opposition has welcomed the announcement that police have begun investigating the illegal exportation of beche-de-mer.

The Solomon Star reports the opposition leader, Steve Abana, as saying those involved must face the full force of the law.

He says allowing corruption to breed within the government system and more so in the productive sector, including fisheries, only denies the public much needed funds.

Mr Abana also says Gordon Darcy Lilo has still not addressed the legality of his appointment as acting Fisheries Minister during which he referred the matter of the beche-de-mer to cabinet.
