Three Indonesians charged over Papua torture

2:36 pm on 14 January 2011

Three Indonesian soldiers have appeared before a military tribunal charged with disobeying orders over the brutal videoed torture of two Papuans.

The three were filmed as they repeatedly poked a fiery stick at the genitals of one of the men and held a gun to his head.

They have been charged with ignoring their commander's instructions.

Human rights activists say the video is clear evidence of human rights abuse and that the three soldiers should face Indonesia's Human Rights Tribunal.
