Pulu to stay in Tonga cabinet despite Pohiva resignation

Tonga's tourism minister says he will stay in Cabinet, despite his party's leader walking away from his position of health minister.

The leader of the Democratic Party of Friendly Islands, Akilisi Pohiva, resigned as health minister, less than two weeks after being appointed.

Mr Pohiva has expressed disappointment at his party being given only two out of the 11 ministries in the government announced by the new prime minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, late last month.

Isileli Pulu says he has his party's support to stay in Cabinet.

"The party's last decision was for us to remain in cabinet. Unfortunately, Akilisi approached the party, and the party said it's up to Akilisi now. So, I think Akilisi has a right to make his own decision. And the party is happy and they agree for me to remain in cabinet."
