Winds from Cyclone Zelia easing as it heads towards Norfolk Islands

2:40 pm on 17 January 2011

Cyclone Zelia is continuing to head south towards Norfolk Island, generating strong winds of up to 80 knots.

The cyclone is expected to pass just west of Norfolk Island, where a cyclone warning is in place, early tomorrow morning.

A duty forecaster at the Fiji Meteorological Service, Amit Singh says the category three cyclone is still moving towards the Tasman Sea but the winds are expected to ease over the next 24 hours.

"Now to midnight we expect some subtle decreases in the wind, say by this evening. Now the wind close to the centre is 80 knots. But we expect by midnight to decrease to say 70 knots close to the centre."
