An American Samoan mayor has been charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, which is a felony.

44-year-old Troy Fiaui, who is the mayor of Auto and Amaua, was charged following a raid on the defendant's home by police last Friday.

According to the government's case, police discovered two live marijuana plants about one to two feet high about 20 metres from his home.

Troy Fiaui has refused to make a statement to police in connection with what was found during the raid.

During his initial appearance in court, the judge reduced his bail from 30,000 US dollars to 20,000.
