Cyclone Wilma now Category Three

11:12 am on 25 January 2011

Tonga's police commander says if Cyclome Wilma diverts off its current track, the Kingdom could be in for quite a storm.

The Fiji MetService says the Category Three cyclone will hit Tonga around midday.

Tonga's Police Commander, Chris Kelley says the cyclone appears to be slowing down.

"It seems to be moving across the Northern Group, Vava'u, late this morning, around lunchtime, and then moving west. I hope it keeps that track, because it will then move away from the other island groups. If it doesn't I think we could be in for a bit of a storm."

Chris Kelley says effects overnight were minimal, with Vava'u reporting strong winds, but no damage.

A cyclone alert is also in force for the Southern Lau group of Fiji.
