Government offices in CNMI disconnected from power grid

3:25 pm on 28 January 2011

Many government offices on the Northern Mariana island of Tinian have been disconnected from the power grid by the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation because of unpaid bills.

The corporation's executive director Abe Utu Malae says the 59,000 US dollar bill represents unpaid accounts for October and November 2010.

Disconnected agencies include the departments of Labor, Lands and Natural Resources, Public Lands, Commerce, Community and Cultural Affairs, Agriculture, and Public Works.

The Mayor's Office, Municipal Treasury, gymnasium, and some outreach programs were also left without power.

Abe Utu Malae says disconnection notices were sent to the offices beforehand.
