Tonga's parliamentarians have been told to establish close links with their voters and ensure they represent their concerns in parliament.

This advice is from a former Solomon Islands prime minister, Sir Peter Kenilorea, who addressed Tonga's MPs at a parliamentary awarenesss and leadership workshop this week.

He told them that translating national issues to constituents is the most important role for MPs.

The meeting also discusssed the need for MPs to have facilities in their constituencies where they could meet the public.

The workshop attendees are urging that facilities be set up to allow both the Government and MPs to have a presence in their constituencies.
