PNG sporting icon gunned down in Port Moresby street

7:31 pm on 7 February 2011

The Papua New Guinea sporting community is mourning the death of a rugby league legend Aquilla Emil, who was shot dead last Friday outside a Port Moresby hotel.

The National reports Emil was gunned down with a pistol at close range early that morning following an argument that started when his car was involved in a collision.

The paper reports the suspect in the case is another well known Papua New Guinean.

The police have confirmed the death and say they are carrying out investigations.

They say it's not known whether the shooting was premeditated or if there had been previous stand-offs between the 44 year-old and the suspect.

The former PNG Kumuls player and rugby league icon leaves behind his wife and six children.
