American Samoa's representative in the United States Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, plans to take Chile's treatment of Rapa Nui to the United Nations.
The congressman also wants to garner more support from Pacific Island leaders to help deal with the needs of Easter Island's indigenous people in their ancestral lands dispute with Chilean authorities.
Faleomavaega has just returned to Washington and says he wants to help find a resolution for the isolated Rapa Nui as soon as possible.
"I'm going to be meeting with the officials of the State Department. I'm also going to prepare a resolution expressing congressional concerns and take this matter to the United Nations in every form possible so that the voices of the people of Rapa Nui will be properly heard."
