New Zealand names cabinet minister as Cook Islands high commisssioner

New Zealand has made retiring cabinet minister, John Carter, the new high commissioner to the Cook Islands.

Mr Carter, who'll take up the post in August replacing career diplomat Linda Te Puni, is the current minister of civil defence, senior citizens and racing.

The foreign minister, Murray McCully, says New Zealand's development assistance to the Cook Islands has increased significantly in the past two years and that Mr Carter will be take a strong leadership role in managing the relationship.
