More than a hundred people are thought to be suffering from typhoid in Fiji after an outbreak of the disease in the interior of Naitasiri.

The Fiji Village news site says the numbers are still to be confirmed.

However, medical staff on the ground have confirmed that the outbreak is serious.

They have placed a curfew on the villagers, and doctors have been making regular visits to monitor the situation.

It is understood that all those diagnosed with typhoid are being treated at Vunidawa Hospital while the serious cases have been taken to Suva.

There is a health team on the ground to tell people about the importance of hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease.
