Vanuatu leader tries to stitch together new coalition

4:05 pm on 14 February 2011

There are reports in Vanuatu that the prime minister, Sato Kilman is considering calling an early election as he scrambles to restore his coalition.

This comes after the leader of the opposition, Edward Natapei, claimed they now have the support of a clear majority of 34 MPs in the 52 seat parliament.

Last Friday two government ministers, UMP members Serge Vohor and Charlot Salwai, both resigned as a motion of no confidence against Mr Kilman was presented to parliament.

The 29 MPs who signed the no confidence vote also requested a parliament session later this week to debate the motion.

Our correspondent, Len Garae, says Mr Kilman is busy trying to bolster his support, but also considering other options.

"Now the Prime Minister is looking at [getting] political parties in, for example the VRP. Whether that comes about or not, the Prime Minister is reported to be considering the possibility of calling early elections."
