The Vanuatu National Disaster Management office says the Vanuatu mobile police force will be deployed to remote areas this morning to assess the damage caused by cyclone Atu.

Nearly 400 people were evacuated from their homes in the capital yesterday after Cyclone Atu brought gale force winds and heavy rain to Port Vila.

Early this morning, the category 4 storm was about 144 kilometres east-north-east of Tanna.

Ron Tamtam of the National Disaster Management office says he has made contact with officials on Tanna.

"At the moment I have instructed the Disaster Committees on Tanna and the members of the National Disaster Management office there for them to attend to any requests concerning evacuations to do any assessment there."
