Bribery claim in Vanuatu power tussle

4:20 pm on 24 February 2011

Vanuatu's opposition group led by Edward Natapei is accusing the government of the prime minister Sato Kilman of bribery after the oppposition withdrew a no confidence motion.

The motion was to be debated on Monday.

The government side had 28 MPs in parliament while the opposition had only 15.

Mr Natapei says they did have the numbers, but he says some MPs were threatened by the government side, forcing them to withdraw their signatures from the motion.

He also says the opposition is aware of money being paid to some MPs to withdraw their signatures.

The government of Sato Kilman has the support of 28 MPs while the opposition has 24.
