Vanuatu's opposition group led by Edward Natapei says it believes at least one MP was bribed with up to 33,000 US dollars to withdraw support for a motion of no-confidence.

The motion was to be debated on Monday.

The government side had 28 MPs in parliament while the opposition had only 15.

Our correspondent, Hilaire Bule, says one government MP announced at the airport that one oppostion MP who had signed the motion was bribed to withdraw from it.

"He told the people at the airport that you corrupt him first but I will buy him tonight at the amount of three million [vatu]."
