Health officials in Fiji say they believe the latest outbreak of typhoid fever is now under control.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed ten cases of the disease in Naitasiri Province on Viti Levu and 22 confirmed cases in the northern division over the past few weeks.

The Deputy Secretary of Public Health, Dr Joe Koroivueta, says health officials have been coping well with the outbreak and are continuing to create awareness.

"I believe it's under control. And I believe that we're going to have small pockets of here and there because typhoid fever is endemic to Fiji. And I also believe that we are working towards you know elimination of typhoid."

Dr Joe Koroivueta says health officials are still working to ensure those affected have access to clean water and safe waste disposal systems.
