The leader of Samoa's re-elected HRPP says he's happy with the number of MPs returned to parliament from his party.

The party won 36 seats, including seven independent MPs expected to support HRPP.

However, the opposition is trying to convince some of those independents to cross the floor

Three cabinet ministers were also ousted, and more than half the HRPP members are new.

But Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi isn't worried that his prediction of the HRPP securing 40 seats did not come true.

"I did not give you the lower range, the lower range was 36 to 40 so it is within the range and I am very very pleased."
