Fishing banned on Sundays in parts of Hawaii

11:47 am on 8 March 2011

Officials in Hawaii are banning fishing in state and federal waters on Sundays as the fishery is soon to catch the maximum amount allowed this season.

Authorities say they are limiting the catch from next week to prevent unsustainable fishing.

They say the closure coincides with a federal ban that regulates bottomfishing.

Federal regulators say more than 250,000 pounds of seven bottomfish species may be caught in both federal and state waters off Hawaii this season.

The fishing ban will remain in effect through the end of August.
