French Polynesia carries out tsunami readiness exercise

The French Polynesian capital, Papeete, will today carry out an exercise to test its readiness to deal with a tsunami.

The focus of the alert will be the evacuation of school children, with parents being advised not to rush to schools as the children will be transferred to higher centres.

Tahitipresse says the exercise will involve firefighters in the streets of Papeete assist.

In 2009, the alert triggered by the tsunami off Samoa caused traffic jams and led to the collapse of all telephone systems.
