The Northern Mariana' Safety Officials says the evacuation of residents from low-lying areas on Saipan after the earthquake on Friday went smoothly, apart from some traffic congestion.

The Commissioner at the Department of Public Safety, Santiago Tudela, said he did not get any information about serious incidents on either Tinian or Rota and presumes the evacuation was problem free.

Its press secretary, Angel Demapan, said normal tide levels were nearly a metre higher and the change is thought to have been caused by the earthquake in Japan.
