Voters in Marianas will decide on Saipan casino

2:43 pm on 14 March 2011

Voters in the Northern Marianas are again to decide whether to legalise casino gambling on Saipan where similar proposals have already twice been rejected.

The casino bill author Representative Stanley Torres and the House Ways and Means Committee have agreed to work on a casino initiative instead of pursuing their plans of introducing substitute or new casino bills.

Mr Torres said he supported the idea if it was the fastest way to deal with the issue.

The House minority leader, Diego Benavente, said allowing Saipan voters to decide on the casino issue was best, rather than relying on the decision of 29 lawmakers.
