Fiji's Bainimarama upset at travel sanctions imposed on rugby sevens players

10:22 am on 19 March 2011

Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says if Fiji can not send the best team to the Australia sevens due to the travel sanctions, then don't send a team at all.

His comment follows the Fiji Rugby Union saying it's highly likely to drop its top players after the Hong Kong 7s next weekend because the three are unlikely to get visas to go to the Adelaide tournament.

Dale Tonawai, Nikola Matawalu and Waqabaca Kotobalavu each serve in the Fiji armed forces.

Australia has taken a strong stance on it's travel sanctions, and continues to reject the visas of those in the military, navy and the government and those connected to them.

Commodore Bainimarama says the Fiji Rugby Union should stop playing politics and fight for the right to send the best team to the IRB sanctioned tournaments.

Fiji Village says Commodore Bainimarama also added that this needs to be done for rugby, and no other reason.
