Papua New Guinea's prime minister has been found guilty of 13 charges of misconduct in office for submitting annual financial statements late or incomplete.

A leadership tribunal heard last week 25 allegations that Sir Michael Somare failed to complete or did not file financial statements from as far back as 20 years ago.

Radio Australia says the tribunal was set up following Sir Michael Somare's referral, first from the Ombudsman Commission, and then from the Public Prosecutor to the Chief Justice.

The three-man panel of foreign judges released their decision yesterday.
