Two Fiji policemen suspended while under investigation for allegedly assaulting students

Two Fiji police officers from Vanua Levu have been suspended while they're investigated for allegedly assaulting a group of school students aged 11 to 13.

The officers have been transferred from their remote station in Cakaudrove to Labasa police station while they are investigated.

Police spokesman, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, says the two policemen went to the primary school in Cakaudrove, after receiving a complaint about some students.

"They allegedly used a stick to punish these children during a school assembly. And this is wrong. And the Fiji police force does not condone these acts by individual officers who seem to have taken the law into their own hands."

Atunaisa Sokomuri says police have taken statements from the students and expects the investigation to be completed by the end of this week.
