American Samoans urged to take care of health

3:57 pm on 24 March 2011

The chief medical officer of LBJ Medical Center in American Samoa is calling on people to take better care of themselves.

Aloiamoa Anesi was speaking after a recent surge in deaths at the hospital.

He says many of the deaths were the result of complications from poorly controlled diabetes and hypertension.

Dr Anesi says the whole population needs to rise up and meet the challenge by promoting healthy life styles.

He says American Samoa has had an unhealthy population for too long and it's up to everyone to do something about it.
