Solomon Islands opposition to choose new leader

10:21 am on 26 March 2011

The Solomon Islands opposition office says it now expects to hold an election for a new leader this evening.

A new leader was expected to be elected several days ago, following the decision of Democratic Party leader Steve Abana to stand down from the opposition leadership.

But a spokesperson from the opposition office, Deli Oso says some MPs failed to turn up for a scheduled meeting to elect a new leader on Thursday.

She says the deputy leader Matthew Wale has now written to members to advise them to attend tomorrow's meeting because a new leader must be appointed before parliament resumes on Monday.
