Philippines cricket visits Fiji

11:07 am on 1 April 2011

Two regional cricket teams from Fiji will be hosting friendly 20/20 matches against the Philippines' national cricket team today.

It will be the first time since 2007 that Fiji has hosted a foreign cricket team, as Fiji tends to travel overseas for international matches.

The Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Fiji, Jon Symonds says the Philippines' squad is stopping over in Fiji before making its way to Samoa for its world cricket league series.

"In the morning we're playing a T/20 which will be a Nadi invitation 11 to play against the Philippines' national side. And in the afternoon we're playing a T/20 which will be Lautoka Cricket Association invitation 11 against the Philippines team again."

Jon Symonds says the matches will create an opportunity for players on the fringe of national selection, to play against a national team to test their ability to play at that level.

Fiji will be hosting another friendly match in just over a week when Tonga also stops over before heading to Samoa.
