Fiji has signed an agreement on regional security with Vanuatu Police.

The Fiji Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Iowane Naivaluarua, signed the agreement with Major Job Esau who is the Director of the National Disaster Management Office of the Vanuatu police.

A Fiji police spokesperson, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, says Vanuatu was particularly interested in Fiji's community policing set-up.

A Vanuatu report published last week criticised the quality of appointments made in the force, saying unsuitable people got jobs while political influence was a factor.

The armed segment of the force has also been criticised for its culture of violence and was accused of considered itself as being above the law.
