Vanuatu Opposition says government split over Papua position at MSG

3:37 pm on 4 April 2011

The leader of the opposition in Vanuatu, Edward Natapei, has called on cabinet ministers who support West Papua to resign from the coalition government of prime minister, Sato Kilman.

Mr Natapei claims Mr Kilman last week failed to back the decision of his own council of ministers to not support making Indonesia an observer in the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

Last week at the Suva MSG summit, Melanesian leaders granted observer status to Indonesia.

Mr Natapei says it's clear the Vanuatu government is divided over the issue of the Melanesians of West Papua.

Before the summit in Suva Mr Natapei had said West Papua should've been given observer status ahead of Jakarta.
