PNA meeting in Tuvalu to discuss improved resource management

6:32 pm on 5 April 2011

Officials from the Parties to the Nauru Agreement are meeting in Tuvalu to discuss key issues around sustainable management and development of its tuna.

Later this week fisheries ministers from the PNA members, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu meet.

The PNA's aim is to cooperate to sustainably manage and develop this key resource and the meeting will focus on additional measures such as extending the day vessel scheme which allocates a certain number of days that a vessel can fish within the PNA zone.

It will also finalise the preparations for the launch of the PNA's Observer Agency which will help members meet and sustain the aim of having observers on all purse seiners.
