Four students from Fiji have been awarded medical scholarships to study in Cuba.

According to the Fiji Times newspaper, the students will undergo a Bachelor of Surgery and Medicine at the Latin American School of Medicine from September.

The scholarship program offered by the Cuban government, covers six years of study and includes a year of Spanish lessons.

Under the scholarships, the Cuban government will cover tuition, lodging, meals, books, dental and monthly allowances, while Fiji's Public Service Commission will pay for return airfares and a supplementary allowance.

The Commission's Permanent Secretary Parmesh Chand says the scholarships are a huge boost to Fiji and the Health Ministry.
