Hotels in the Northern Marianas have cut work hours and some operations have been temporarily suspended as a result of group travel cancellations after last month's earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
The chairman of the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands, Nick Nishikawa, gives the example of the premier hotel, the Hyatt Regency, where workers have been put on a 32-hour week.
It's also closing each of its restaurants two days a week to cope with the plummeting occupancy.
Mr Nishikawa says the best-case scenario for international departures from Japan is a decline of 11 percent in 2011, but this could plunge to 21 percent.
