CNMI contemplates new US$15 travel fee

3:09 pm on 11 April 2011

Tourists from non-U.S. countries travelling to the Northern Marianas could be asked to pay an additional 15 US dollars in what's dubbed a travel and promotion fee.

The payment is included as an amendment to the two-month-old Japan Air Service Stabilisation Programme that is currently being discussed.

The Lieutenant Governor, Eloy Inos, said the new fee would be used to promote travel to the CNMI with airlines collecting the fee on behalf of the government.

The government also plans to use the fee to help pay customs and quarantine costs.
