A spokesman for Vanuatu's government has questioned the opposition claim that a majority of MPs support its motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister, Sato Kilman.
The speaker has ruled the opposition's motion to be in order, paving the way for a debate next Thursday.
The Prime Minister's advisor, Richard Kaltongga, says they are aware of opposition claims to have signatures of support from 27 of parliament's 52 MPs
"As to whether they have the 27 MPs, that could possibly be another question because in the past many of the motions they have tried to push through, they have used old signatures from previous motions."
The opposition, led by Edward Natapei, has also deposited a motion requesting an extra-ordinary session of parliament.
