The Vanuatu parliamentary speaker, Maxime Carlot Korman, has adjourned an extra-ordinary session due to be held this morning to consider a motion for a vote of no confidence in the prime minister, Sato Kilman.
The meeting was postponed until Sunday after Mr Kilman and his group of 24 MPs refused to enter the chamber, depriving the parliament of a quorum.
Mr Kilman says they decided to boycott the meeting to give the government time to win more MPs to their side.
If there had been a vote this morning, it appears the opposition had the numbers with the backing of at least 26 of the 52 MPs.
After the postponement the opposition MPs returned to the Tara Beach Resort where they have been secluded for the past week.
