American Samoa maritime workers test positive to drug use

3:33 pm on 2 May 2011

Five employees of the American Samoa Department of Port Administration have tested positive in mandatory drug testing required for all maritime workers.

The Port Director Matagi Ray McMoore says the tests were conducted some time ago but the results were only received recently.

He says he's still to decide whether the employees concerned will be sacked.

Another five workers who refused to be tested have reportedly been put on leave.

Some of the staff affected are crew on the inter island vessel, MV Sili, and services could be affected if they lose their jobs.

The vessel is also set to make a trip to Swains next week to take ocean ambassador Jean Michel Costeau to promote awareness of the island's marine treasures.
