One of the Pacific's top weightlifters has high expectations of himself ahead of next week's Oceania Championship in Darwin.

The meet is being run alongside the Arafura Games sports tournament in Australia's Northern Territory.

Niusila Opeloge was one of three Samoan lifters to win a gold medal at last year's Delhi Commonwealth Games, matching the feat of his sister Ele.

He says while that was a breakthrough performance for him he still thinks he can improve.

"To get more weight because I think my lift in New Delhi, I think is not good, so that's why I work hard to get my performance more to next step."

Niusila Opeloge says he's aiming to lift 153kg in the snatch and more than 200kg in the clean and jerk.

The Oceania Weightlifting Champs begin on Tuesday.
