New-look Samoan sevens team heads to London

A new-look Samoan sevens team fly out for England tonight with a firm eye on the future.

They've failed to reach the lofty heights which saw them win their first ever World Series crown in 2010, and trail leaders New Zealand by 34 points on the overall standings.

The experienced trio of Uale Mai, Fautua Otto and Lolo Lui have been ruled out of next week's London event through and coach Stephen Betham says that's forced them to blood some younger players.

"That's why we're sort of using this to gauge and see whether they're ready for the next tournament or if we have to look elsewhere. Just got to regroup and thing about next year. We do have some, few, seasonal players in there and I think it's time we start looking at younger players and refocusing on our next goal."

Stephen Betham says he's confident there's enough local talent in Samoa to ensure the team will, once again, be up there competing with the top teams next season.
