Protest at high cost of living moves to New Caledonia's north

There has been a rally in the north of New Caledonia against at the high cost of living.

The action is part of a three-day strike aimed at forcing the government to adopt structural reforms.

Local radio reports say according to police, about 1,500 joined the protest in Kone, which has forced the closure of some offices and schools.

Yesterday, a protest march was held in the capital, Noumea, which the local newspaper says was attended by 12,000 people.

A third day of protest is planned tomorrow, with a rally in the Loyalty Islands Province.
