Tonga still awaiting extradition application for fugitive Fiji officer

5:16 pm on 18 May 2011

Tonga's Solicitor General, Aminiasi Kefu, says the government's still awaiting an extradition request for the Fiji former senior military officer who's speaking out against the interim regime in his country.

The Attorney General's office in Fiji says an application for the extradition of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara from Tonga has been sent.

Fiji's Solicitor General, Christopher Pryde, says the application has been sent to Tonga's Prime Minister as he has the authority to proceed on such cases under the Tongan Extradition Act.

But Mr Kefu says Tonga's received only a diplomatic note regarding Ratu Tevita.

"We haven't received any official communication from Fiji amounting to a proper extradition request in order to process it in the courts. We've heard that they've filed and sent an extradition request in the media with the press releases but so far what we have received does not amount to an extradition request."
