Visitor arrivals in April to the Northern Mariana Islands dropped 18 percent, compared to the same period last year.

The significant loss follows the March 11 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis in Japan.

According to the Marianas Visitors Authority, visitor arrivals to the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota totalled just 21,629 last month, compared to 26,255 in April 2010.

The Saipan Tribune paper reports the Authority also noted arrivals from Japan in April, dropped 26 percent to 7,696.
