An Estonian man who is alleged to have aided a Fiji colonel in his escape to Tonga has been granted bail.

Risto Harmat appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court charged with one count of obstructing to defeat the cause of justice, in relation to the Tongan navy's rescue of Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara.

Fiji Live reports that Mr Harmat's defence lawyer says his client was granted bail by providing a surety.

He was then ordered to surrender his passport and report to the nearest police station.

During his first court appearance Harmat pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The fisherman will reappear in court in two weeks.
