Fiji Taxi Union continues to lobby for fare increase

6:20 pm on 10 June 2011

The Fiji Taxi Union says it will continue to lobby the Minister of Transport until Cabinet approves a fare increase.

Its General Secretary, Rishi Ram, has expressed fears the industry will collapse without an increase, as there has not been one since 2001.

He says despite submissions being tabled on several occasions, Cabinet has so far failed to meet the Taxi Union's request.

"The cabinet was meant to announce the new taxi fare increase on 7th of June. However due to some shortfall, the fare which they were thinking to approve, was not a win-win situation. So in view of this, we have been assured by minister of transport that the new proposal would be put before the cabinet on 21 of June now."

Rishi Ram says many taxi drivers are working more than one job to make ends meet.
